Why Vegan

The simplest answer is my health. After doing a lot of research, I learned that being vegan is the best thing I could do for my health. I’m a cancer survivor and was sick and tired of being sick and tired, I figured I should do something to finally feel better.

I went vegan almost immediately after I finished reading The China Study by Dr. T Colin Campbell. All of the research his book cited about the strong connections between animal protein and cancer made for an easy decision to just give it all up starting September 1, 2009. I have a pretty big family history of cancer and I just don’t want to take the chance so I went vegan for health reasons and I figured it couldn’t hurt.

Over the past five years I have been eating healthier and healthier. At first, I did start incorporating a lot more fruits and veggies into my diet, but it was still filled with fake meat and processed foods. I have since drastically reduced soy, gluten, peanuts (all for healthy thyroid function) as well as refined sugar and most processed foods. I really focus on a whole foods diet and so the recipes in my blog will reflect that. And I continue to eat even healthier as I think there is always room for improvement.

I’ve learned that a whole foods and vegan diet free of refined and processed foods is great for overall health. It helps with weight loss, heart and hormone health, diabetes, arthritis/inflammation, strong immune systems, allergies/sensitivities etc. It really helped me overcome a lot of my health problems and lose weight and feel great. It helped me gain back my energy and confidence.

A year after being vegan, I stopped wearing leather and using anything with animal products in it. I started thinking more about animals and their health as well. It also got me thinking more about the environmental impact. It seems to be a package deal, once you start thinking about one, the others are soon to follow.

And the title of my blog came from the fact that I like saying cutesy things like “Rock my socks” and “Fantarrific” and “Peachy keen jellybean”. These phrases turned into cute vegan phrases like “Rawtastic”, “Rock my Vegan Socks” and “Rawesome”. People either laugh or think I’m weird ;p
