Ok… I know the name of this post-workout snack could use some work. It’s the first name I thought of and haven’t thought of anything better, so runner balls it is.  And the name makes me giggle. Yes, I am immature. If it made you giggle, you are too ;p

They are basically date balls, BUT infused with so many awesome recovery AND energizing things. I made them for the first time for my running group and we gobbled them up after a 9 mile run on a warm, Saturday morning.

They seriously hit the spot. They have carbs, protein and a bit of sweetness to them. And they don’t just have to be after a run. They can be after any type of exercise. Or no exercise at all!

These could also be called “kitchen sink” balls as I literally threw all of the fun mixins I use to make smoothies. I don’t normally throw all of this stuff in at the same time – they are versatile, so you could use what you have on hand and get creative, you don’t have to follow my recipe exactly to achieve deliciousness.

These are inspired by Sarina’s Cookie Dough Balls.

Runner Balls (makes 12 medium-sized balls)

1/4 cup of sunflower seeds (soaked for an hour)
1/4 cup of pumpkin seeds (soaked for an hour)
1/3 cup of oats
5 dates
1 tbsp of gogi berries
1 tsp of maca powder
1 tsp of unsweetened, shredded coconut
1 tbsp of coconut water
1 tbsp of protein powder
1 tsp of vanilla extract (if you have vanilla beans, even better!)
1 tbsp of maple syrup
a pinch of sea salt
1/4 cup of hemp seeds to roll the balls in

Drain your pumpkin & sunflower seeds and throw them in a food processor and grind them up until they break down into a paste. Add your dates and pulse a few times to mix everything up. Then throw all of the remaining ingredients (aside from the hemp seeds) and process until it forms a dough-like ball. This is the messy part! I had my hands slightly damp to more easily roll the dough into balls. Grab a tablespoon, spoon out the mixture and roll it between your hands. Have your hemp seeds in a bowl or cup and roll the ball around until it’s covered. Place the covered ball on a plate and keep rolling! Once you’re done, put the plate in the freezer to firm them up. They retain their shape best when they are kept cold.

  1. These sound super great! I love balls. I made some carrot cake balls recently that were delicious, tasted so much like carrot cake but were completely carrots, dried fruit, nuts and some spices.
    I am also appreciating that you have not put coconut oil in your balls. :)

    1. Thanks Susan! Carrot cake balls? That sounds fantastic =) I sometimes use coconut oil, but I don’t feel it suited these ones. I honestly don’t even think about people who don’t have coconut oil, I should consider that more.

Hahaha runner balls – my husband accuses me of having a dirty mind, but I didn’t even think these were “dirty” until you mentioned it…now I’m giggling, thinking of runner balls jiggling around…hahaha! All jokes aside, they look really tasty – I especially love that they are suitable after no exercise too, as I have not found any time to do exercise lately unfortunately!

  3. Hehe I love the idea of calling these kitchen sink balls (possibly more appealing than thinking about “runner balls” for too long ;p). They’ve got an impressive amount of ingredients in them too, but that’s the best thing about balls like these – they seem to taste good no matter how many things you chuck in 😀

    1. Oooh kitchen sink balls is a great name! They probably have too many ingredients and some weird ones that some people may not have, which is why I mentioned they are versatile. Date balls are awesome =)
