LA Trip – June 2017

I live mere hours away from Southern California, otherwise known as vegan heaven. So you’d think I’d spend a lot of time there. The truth is, we’ve only been a few times since moving here 5 years ago. This fun fact came up while we had a couple over for dinner and they decided we needed to get out there again to try some restaurants we have been missing out on. So the 4 of us packed up and headed there for a weekend. Oh the food we had!

First stop – Real Food Daily.  I have been here before, it’s actually one of my favourite restaurants of all time. The food is so good! Very filling, but without feeling gross afterwards. Almost like a light indulgence. I have never made it there for brunch and was pleasantly surprised to try out this breakfast burrito. Dee-licious!

Supper was all about comfort. Heavy, greasy deliciousness. We checked out Doomies and it did not disappoint. I’m not going to lie to you, this is definitely the kind of place that you feel super gross after eating, but hey, life is about balance and sometimes that balance includes a tasty hot mess of a meal. This is the chicken parm and garlic fries.

We somehow had room for ice cream after… haha. Next to Doomies is the cutest little vegan ice cream parlour ever! Cocobella is reminiscent of a diner and has adorably papered walls complete with ice cream cones and even some kitties and other cute creatures. Definitely worth checking out. Oh and the ice cream is super yummy too. I tried cookie dough and chocolate pb and was thoroughly impressed.

Our whole trip did not revolve around food… mostly, but not all haha. We checked out The Getty which I had never been to. It is a gorgeous architectural masterpiece of a building with rotating collections. And the outer grounds are completely stunning. This is a must see!

I’m typically not a huge brunch person. I don’t like these “in between” meal things as I tend to get hungry every few hours… but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to try brunch at Little Pine. I think it didn’t quite live up to the hype that had been set up for me, but it was very good. The tofu scramble was pretty amazing actually. It had a flavour/spice that I have never experienced in a scramble before. I can’t quite put my finger on it, so I won’t be able to try and recreate it – I’ll just have to live through this memory 😉

And Terry and I had to try a chocolate croissant – something you just don’t see around where we live.

And I’ve saved the best for last. Supper at Crossroads. Before coming here, I would have to say that my best LA vegan meal was at Little Pine. But I think Crossroads not only surpassed them, but blew every single other restaurant I’ve ever been to out of the water.

It’s the type of restaurant where you order several things and share them. The portions are smaller and I like this approach as it means you get to try more things off the menu than you normally would.

We started off with the strawberry feta salad (which I recreated on the blog earlier this week. It was incredibly fresh and delicious. And the cheese plate was the stuff dreams are made out of. I have never had a baked vegan cheezeball before. It was insanely delicious!

We also got a mushroom dish… anything with mushrooms and I’m there!

And this luscious lasagna… handsdown the best lasagna I’ve ever had. The sauce was just incredible.

And the dessert. Oh my goodness the dessert. I can’t even describe how utterly fantastic this dessert was. I still have dreams about it… sorry for the poor picture quality – it was dark by this point.

And it was nice to get all dolled up =)

  1. I love brunch, but I always have to have to eat earlier in the morning. Also I think of eating at 9 o’clock as brunch, but everyone else seems to think it is 11, the curse of being an early riser. 😉

The trip and food looks incredible! I’ve been to Real Food Daily, but only at LAX… so it was fine but not really an accurate representation of eating there, I don’t think. But I dream of going to Doomies one day… and Crossroads… and Little Pine.

    1. I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one that has to eat before brunch haha. I thought I was the only one. I would LOVE brunch at 9am. But yes, you’re right – most people are just getting out of bed at that point on a lazy Sunday.
You’ll just have to make your way out here again sometime. I will show you around =)

  2. Oh wow, what a fun trip! I’ve only been to LA once but didn’t get to go to any vegan restaurants at the time. I’ve always wanted to try Real Food Daily and Crossroads. And girl, I’d mess up that chick’n parm sandwich!

Love how you recreated the strawberry feta salad…now I just need you to recreate that cheeseball! :)

    1. Oh my gosh you need to come out to LA again!! We can go to all of the awesome vegan restaurants. The chick’n parm sandwich is seriously ah-amazing.
Oooh challenge accepted with the cheeseball!
