I love a good Farmers’ Market! You can’t beat fresh produce and friendly people. My husband and I live directly across the street from one that is open Saturdays (the reason I chose the apartment actually), and it is a weekly ritual we always look forward to. That and he gets his coffee fix afterwards from a great café around the corner.
The great thing about the market is I can get almost all of my groceries from the week from it for a great price. I always make sure it’s local and organic for the most part. We even started making friends with some of the farmers – the Strawberry Lady is my favourite =)
Recently, we took a little road trip to a nearby Sunday market in Palo Alto and were greatly rewarded! The market is quite a bit bigger than ours in Santa Clara (which also means busier and more crowded) so it had some things that we are unable to find at the Saturday one. We bought some fresh, local dates which tasted like they had been just plucked from the tree. YUM.
I also found vegan and gluten free falafels! Just a few simple ingredients and they tasted divine. Afterwards, while Terry was getting his coffee fix at my favourite running store (Zombie Runner), I found gluten free and vegan cookies by Liz Lovely. Hands down, the best cookie I have ever had. Now, to be honest, they are not super healthy, but nice for a special treat once in awhile.
When we got home, I made us a great salad for supper with all of the following great stuff we got from the market:
Mixed lettuce, fresh mint & parsley, red onion, heirloom cherry tomatoes, cucumber and the falafels.
The dressing is my absolute favourite from ohsheglows blog (one of my fav blogs!), which can be found here: http://ohsheglows.com/2011/05/12/lightened-up-protein-power-goddess-bowl/
Scroll down for the Lightened Up Tahini Dressing. I halved it for just the two of us.
