I am now almost two weeks into my 30-day chocolate cleanse and I no longer crave chocolate. Woot! Clearly it was time for a cleanse as I had been craving it almost every day. Generally I do well only having it about once a week… or if I’m feeling very disciplined I can go every other week. I love the taste, but I don’t like the way it makes me feel. It gives me the jitters and I feel a little anxious after eating it. I’m just one of those people who does not do well with stimulants. I don’t drink pop or coffee, and chocolate is my drug of choice, but it should definitely be appreciated in moderation.
I do like adding a bit of raw cacao to my breakfast some mornings though. So the past two weeks I have not even really thought about it, I have just been making oatmeal, and millet/teff/amaranth porridge or cereal, toast or smoothies sans cacao.
But I went to the Farmer’s Market on Saturday and saw this:
What a beautiful bouquet of mint. Even better than flowers ;p
I used to love putting fresh mint into my smoothies, but realised I haven’t added any in ages. I think it’s because I used to make smoothies for me and Terry and he doen’t like mint in his smoothies. He’s weird like that. I could probably have a smoothie purely out of mint greens… maybe I should try that sometime. This smoothie has spinach in it as well.
If you are not used to fresh mint, or don’t like it *a lot* like I do, I recommend only putting a few leaves in. I put in a handful =)
I also added a banana (although in the old days it was kale instead of spinach and pear instead of smoothie), some frozen strawberries, vega, maca, carob, coconut etc and voila!
It was super tasty. I’ve been making very boring smoothies for the past couple of months, so I thought I’d shake it up a bit. Mmm yummy.
It was slightly chilly outside this morning and I needed a bit of warming food after the bike ride to the train station and back (I walk or ride with Terry to the train stations in the morning to say bye). I added a bit of gluten free toast to munch on while reading.
I’m heading out to run some errands, so this should keep me nice and full until lunch.
Coconut Carob Mint Smoothie (serves 1 hungry gal)
1 large handful of spinach
1 small handful of mint (or just a few leaves if you are not a crazy mint-lover like me)
1/2 cup frozen strawberries
1 heaping tbsp of carob
1 tsp maca powder
1/2 scoop of vega powder
1 small handful shredded and unsweetened coconut
1/4 cup coconut milk
1/2 cup almond milk
1/4 cup coconut water
Blend and enjoy!
