This bowl is everything you need in a good breakfast. It’s a little naughty with some dates and cocoa powder, but gives you some niceness with its easy peasy base. And the optional protein powder gives it some oomph.

Every once in awhile my bootcamp instructor likes to do an obstacle course with us. It’s something different and fun and keeps things varied. We get a standard sized football field to run around, mixed with sand bells, sand bags, trx, weighted jump ropes and even some hurdles to crawl under. I always look forward to these and the most recent one, he had a special treat for us. He bought us a sled and put 90 pounds on it and got us to push it around the width of the field. I eyeballed it and wasn’t sure I could do it, but I kicked it’s butt. I couldn’t move after, but hey – I did it.

And I came home famished!! Sometimes after a really intense workout, my stomach is tricky. It wants something substantial, but not a big carb-y porridge. And I was hot and wanted something cooling and refreshing. And I wanted chocolate! I knew I needed to replenish some electrolytes and get some protein in too. This bowl totally hit the spot.

Chocolate Power Bowl (serves 1 hungry person)
2 frozen bananas
2 dates
1 heaping tbsp almond butter
1 tbsp cocoa powder
1 tsp maca powder
1 scoop protein powder (optional)
3/4 cup  of coconut water + 1/4 cup of coconut cream (or 1 cup thick coconut milk)
a small handful of ice cubes

Throw everything in the blender and blend away. You can add toppings to it for a little extra pizzaz. I topped mine with shredded coconut, cacao nibs and almond butter.

  1. I have to say, looking at this chocolate power bowl I want to tuck in, but I am not a huge fan of the frozen banana pureed thing, its just too baby food for me. so I will just admire the gorgeous photograph you have shared here – hope you don’t mind me saying so.

    1. Ah yes, frozen banana isn’t for everyone. I bet you could do it with coconut cream instead. That would be quite divine actually.

  2. I would mess one of these up right now! It looks delicious and perfect for a post-workout breakfast. I’m with you, my tummy sometimes gets a little funny after working out hard…and that workout seemed so tough (get it girl!). You deserve those dates and cocoa powder!
